You're Not Imagining It, You're Really Experiencing Intuitive Phenomena

I didn’t have spiritual literacy in my family. We didn’t discuss the vivid dreams or the odd coincidences - beyond the Southern Baptist theology of family religion I never heard discussion about the metaphysical and beyond.

So when I experienced uncanny coincidences and premonitions I had nothing to guide me. And since it’s fringe to regard intuition as equal to mental cognition it was confounding to reconcile my intuitive phenomena. I denied the premonitions for years. Ignored the coincidences and then minimized them as inconsequential. Who cares I had the same restaurant suggestion as my mom? Does it matter if I sensed an old friend might connect with me? So what if I’m feeling strong de ja vu? Big deal I have visceral, vivid dreams.

I know what it’s like to question what’s happening and move in ambiguity. You’re a rational, reasonable person. You’re not susceptible to wishful thinking. You’re clear-eyed and grounded and aren’t easily manipulated by trendy, new age ideas. To make it even more personal, I have a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Cell Science. I respect science, physics, and the languages that connect abstract concepts to knowable existence. So not only was it the lack of spiritual literacy but also the emphasis on the physical world told me to override my intuition.

This is why I’m tarot practitioner. With tarot, I got confirmation that the voice of my mind wasn’t just ego speaking. As much as I dismissed premonitions and coincidences, I couldn’t dismiss the tarot pulls that literally reflected a situation in my life. And as interpretative as tarot is, there could be no denying the readings where I’d speak the ideas in my client’s mind; hone in on the loneliness of the Five of Pentacles; and see the mental charisma that’s entered a client’s life with the King of Swords.e

The majority of the work I do helps clients change their relationship to intuition. Unless you’re of a family with spiritual literacy, it’s rare to have it modeled to you. Ironically, it’s not intuitive to work with intuition. My tarot practice is based on the elemental correspondences of our personhood. With tarot you can see which part of yourself speaks the loudest. Cups let us know when we need to base decisions in emotional resonance. Swords reassure us we can trust our mind and that we have wise discernment. Wands nudge is to trust our will, to move through world guided by what we want. And Pentacles is the head’s up to feel a decision in our body - where does your body light up when you see yourself living through the implications of an important choice?

More importantly, a well crafted spread can confirm if what you’re feeling, and what you know of a situation, can guide you through important moments in your life. Or is there more to the situation? Tarot bridges your intuition to both how you feel and what you know. It’s a powerful mirror.
