Why Do Psychic Readings Cost What They Do?

A Transparent Look at the Price of Intuition

Psychic Pricing Is Wild

What’s too much to pay? What really goes into the price? And how can I tell if a psychic is legit - or worth the cost?

I break down it below so you can feel better about the psychic you choose and the price you pay. We aren’t taught how to interact with psychic services and that blind spot breeds mistrust, confusion and disappointing experiences - for both the client and practitioner. As you read on I hope this helps you navigate the terrain with more clarity.

Transparency is a cornerstone value of my divination practice - not only because I want to help redeem this field from a reputation of predation and exploitation, but because I want you to understand what you’re paying for in a psychic experience. When you book a psychic reading, you should feel informed, respected and clear about what you’ll receive.

In this post, I’ll use my own practice as the example - tracing the journey from when I started to where I am today, in July 2025. By the end you’ll understand the structure of my pricing model, the reasoning behind it, and what goes into the cost of professional psychic session and pricing journey that got me here.

Setting My Initial Prices

In February 2019 I began operating professionally when I obtained my LLC in Florida. I knew from the beginning I would follow the laws and expectations required of me to operate a psychic business in my city and state. I didn’t just see lawful operations as a legal requirement but I also saw it as a foundational component to running a business with integrity. This meant filing the appropriate paperwork, and establishing a formal payment process.

Once that was established I went on to research the market of psychic services in my area with the following considerations:

  • I looked at the prices for respected psychics and tarot readers whose work I admired to determine the premium range. I used their prices to set the upper parameter of my pricing.

  • I then reviewed the rates of local psychics in Jacksonville. Rather than attract clients through social media platforms, with an extended reach outside my geographical area, I chose to operate with a local focus. With this I had an average price of a local psychic in Jacksonville, Florida.

  • Lastly, I did general research into the prices of similar services like reiki services.

From there I set my criteria for pricing based on education, training, and experience. When I began in Spring of 2019, I established an hourly rate of $65. It reflected my early stage as a professional tarot reader. At the time psychic pricing ranged widely from inexpensive to hundreds of dollars. I intentionally set my rate at roughly half the market average to attract clients and quickly build my experience. Offering affordable psychic readings was important to me then just as it is now.

To note though, when I started my psychic practice I had 15 years corporate experience with over a decade of client-facing experience. I came into the field as an expert in presentation, professionalism, and skilled communication. However, none of these justified premium pricing when the core of my psychic abilities had not yet been evaluated by clients in my market. I had much to learn and experience when it came to holding space for psychic experience for a stranger that was willing to pay me for a divination experience.

At the same time I was hired by a Jacksonville spa to offer intuitive services for their clientele and we agreed to split the payment with a percentage going to me and the remainder to the spa. Working at the spa was an important step in my professional development as it quickened the pace of my gaining experience with clients while observing the operational functions of the spa.

Once my pricing was set I was open for business and accepting payments.

Price Increases - What Goes Into Raising My Prices?

Experience-Based Pricing

After setting my initial prices I decided to use an experience-based method for increasing my prices. This approach is loosely based on the apprentice method where rates increase according to acquired experience. I like that model because it ties experience to value. In my line of work experience is a driver of expertise.

In the six years I’ve sat with clients as young as 10 years old (hired for a birthday party and I used child appropriate deck) and those clients well into their retirement. I’ve seen every income level, education and range of professions. I’ve also sat with groups from communities different than my origin including Latinos, Caribbean, European, Asian, and other groups. I’ve helped mothers dealing with incarcerated adult children, lovers experiencing betrayals, professionals deciding to open their own business, artists, and transplants deciding if they should stay in their adopted city or return home. My ability to meet each client on their terms, in the midst of their busy lives, is what sets a professional apart from the informal coffee table reading.

Time In Practice

Thus early in my career, when my experience was thin and untested, I stayed at $65 for over two years. As I hit milestones I increased to $80 per hour then in Spring 2023 when my prices rose to $90 and now my hourly rate for tarot is $110. As of Summer 2025 I have over 1,000 hours of professional reading time. Each time I increased my prices I factored in total hours reading, years in business and the range of questions asked. I used these considerations when deciding to increase my rates.

Timeline of Psychic Pricing Milestones

  • $65/hour (Spring 2019)

  • $80/hour (Summer 2021)

  • $90/hour (Spring 2023)

  • $110/hour (Summer 2025)

Also important, I factored in my local market conditions and the sensitivity of prices for the clients I serve locally. I also weigh other factors like inflation, my operating expenses and the probability of economic distress. While I consider factors like inflation and operating expenses, they do not drive my price increases. The primary factor is my accumulated experience. I don’t lead price increases with these considerations as I want to preserve the model that ties experience to value, which is why I haven’t raised prices in the past year. I’m operationally lean, generally frugal and prefer to keep expenses low as a way of making my services available to a range of clients and not just as a treat for the affluent.

Building Trust With Psychic Clients

Another component of pricing is the proportion of readings originating from new clients, repeat clients and referrals. I use all three as indicators of my business health. If too many of my sessions come from new clients with no follow-up, it tells me something isn’t landing. A healthy blend of new clients, returning clients, and referrals helps me gauge whether the work resonates. This is why a blend of new clients, repeat clients and referrals is ideal. My ability to attract new clients tells me my online presence is working while repeat clients indicates not only can I attract someone willing to take a chance on my services but I provided value to that client. Referrals from clients are also a good sign that my clients trust me enough to send a family member, colleague or friend.

Psychic Ability

You may have noticed I didn’t open or lead with my awesome psychic powers. As much as my ego would love to indulge in a scenario where I’m known as the best psychic in the city with prices to match the reality is psychic ability isn’t magical. It’s available to anyone. Just like the ability to play a musical instrument resides in each child, so too does intuition and psychic sensing. These senses aren’t developed in childhood because we’re taught to mistrust psychic intelligence but I changed that when I started to experience psychic sensing in my 30s. I made choices to understand this phenomenon, decode it, track it, and integrate it both into my personal and professional navigation.

And yes, we should value the trained musician’s skill, talent and experience. Just as we should value the plumber, interior designer, and teacher that developed their talents into skill. Likewise for myself, a session in my office builds upon talent, skill, and experience. The development of my psychic ability was deliberate, methodical and layered. But ability alone isn’t enough to justify prices. There is no shortage of talented psychics but we need talent paired with skill, care and professionalism.

It’s No Easy Thing To Divine

Divination requires nuance. It demands intelligence. It asks for emotional sensitivity - and a functional psychic antenna, too. Maintaining that antenna is an ongoing, dynamic, evolving process.

For me, improvement meant constant evaluation of my work: seeking client feedback, admitting when I missed the mark, and tracking outcomes over time.

Good psychics are honest about their errors. Good psychics set aside fragility in service of growth. And good clients recognize the value of candor - and are willing to pay a fair price for it.

What Next? Price Hike?

Many friends, colleagues, and some clients have encouraged me to raise my price. While I see what other practitioners charge for adjacent services like reiki, massage, and mediumship I chose to resist rapid increases. I know my clients value the quality and consistency of my readings, and I do plan to raise my prices. I will do so gently, patiently and with my clients in mind. This is why I offer a tipping option when checking out. For my skill and experience, I am likely underpriced. The tipping option is a way for clients to acknowledge my value outside of my published rate. It’s a model that allows for gradual price increases to my rates.

My long term aim is have sustainable psychic pricing - rates that provide the financial security I need to live and operate, while allowing for well-paced growth and resiliency.

I charge what I do, not because I’m a magical exception, but because I worked hard to develop skill, care and precision in a mysterious art.
